Master Thesis - Geometry Assurance
Join us for a Spring 2025 Master Thesis at Polestar in Gothenburg to assess current process for nominal buck verification and possible replacement in virtual world.
The opportunity
We're currently looking for two master students to conduct a Master Thesis project with us during Spring 2025 within the field of Geometry assurance at HQ in Gothenburg in cooperation with PE Geometry. The subject is to identify and describe the nominal buck verification process and analyze if it is possible to replace with virtual tools.
The background
Geometry Assurance is an essential part in product development as well as manufacturing. The goal is to minimize the effect of geometrical variation to secure quality and aesthetics of the car. To manage this, several activities are done throughout the development of a new Polestar car; like manufacturing simulation studies, visualization, measurement preparation, measurements, matching in prototype builds etc. One activity is to verify aesthetical gap and flush relations using a “nominal buck”. The nominal buck is a precision-made physical representation of a part of, or complete body in white. The method is expensive and not very effective from a change management perspective and a virtual replacement could save both time and money.
The scope
Analyze and describe today’s process for nominal buck verification and matching activities. This should also include identification of non-geometrical exercises to ensure that all usage of the nominal buck is covered. Investigate and learn virtual tools, like “RD&T Virtual Matching”, for geometrical verification and matching purposes. Then evaluate all learnings to determine if virtual methods could be used instead of physical methods for verification and matching.
We believe the project will contain roughly the following parts:
- Literature study
- Goals/milestone definition
- Analysis description of Polestar nominal buck process and activities
- Analysis and learning of virtual tools for verification and geometrical matching
- Compare current method and proposed new method
- Document the results in a thesis report and make a final presentation
The ideal candidates
We are looking forward to reading your application with the following requirements:
- Currently enrolled in a Swedish University
- Have an upcoming master thesis course throughout the Spring of 2025 within the fields of Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design Engineering or Product Development
- Proficient in English, both written and spoken communication
- Structured analyst with ability to quickly comprehend complex systems and zoom in on vital areas
- Ability to take own initiatives and work independently
- Knowledge of basic engineering and manufacturing
The process
If the above matches your ambitions, be sure to apply. Applications will close November 22nd, and interviews will be held on an ongoing basis.
